What manufacturers are up against

From the shop floor to the front office, it all has to hold

A line that stops costs real money per hour. Here's where technology gets in the way, and how we head it off.

Connectivity that dies past the office

Coverage is fine at the front desk and useless at the far bay, the mezzanine, or the paint area.

How we fix it

A real site survey walked at working height, then access points and cabling placed for the building you actually have.

Old systems carrying new demands

A machine that still makes money is driven by a controller nobody wants to touch, on an operating system nobody supports.

How we fix it

Isolate it properly instead of replacing it. Its own segment, no path to the internet, controlled access, imaged and backed up.

Security gaps and customer pressure

Your drawings and your process are the business. And increasingly your customers want to know how you protect them before they'll place the order.

How we fix it

Layered security around the office and the plant, with the boundary between them managed on purpose and documented as we go.

No in-house IT to manage it all

The controls engineer became the IT department by accident, and now both jobs wait on each other.

How we fix it

One local team that owns the IT side so your engineer can go back to engineering, and knows where that line is.

A plant is not one network. It's a stack.

From the floor to the front office

Six layers. Not all of them are ours.

Most IT companies pitch a plant like it's one flat network. It isn't, and knowing where the line sits is the difference between a partner and a problem. Tap a layer.

The conversation nobody enjoys

Old machine, modern network

Almost every plant has at least one machine running on something ancient. The wrong answer is to replace it. The other wrong answer is to ignore it.

Why you can't just upgrade

The honest constraints

  • The machine builder never certified it on a newer operating system
  • The controller software will not run on anything current
  • Re-validating a process after a change costs more than the risk appears to
  • The machine still makes money every single shift
  • Nobody wants to be the person who took the line down to satisfy a checklist

What we do instead

Contain it properly

  • Put it on its own network segment, away from everything else
  • Remove its path to the internet entirely
  • Control and log who can reach it, and from where
  • Image the machine so a dead drive is an afternoon, not a month
  • Back it up and actually test the restore
  • Write it down, so the next person knows why it is like that

What we won't do

Where we stop

  • Program your PLCs or touch your HMIs
  • Go anywhere near a safety system
  • Tell you to scrap a working machine to satisfy an IT policy
  • Pretend the line is our department when it isn't
  • Quote a floor without walking it first

Straight talk

We are not machine integrators. We don't program controls, we don't touch safety systems, and we won't pretend the production equipment is ours to manage. Your integrator or machine builder owns that, and we would rather work alongside them than talk over them.

What we do own is everything around it: the network under the controls, the plant systems, the boundary between the plant and the office, the business IT, and who gets to reach in from outside. That is a real scope with a real edge to it, and knowing where the edge is means nobody discovers it during an outage.

And we will not tell you to replace a machine that still runs because its controller is old. We'll isolate it and document it, which is what a careful shop does anyway.

Laser Specialists, Inc. — two plants, one standard

A laser cutting and manufacturing company running two Michigan locations, in Fraser and Washington, came to us on a residential-grade firewall, unmanaged infrastructure, and frequent connectivity problems. We rebuilt both sites on business-class equipment, ran Cat6 and built a new server room at Washington, replaced the camera system with a cloud-managed platform, and unified the phone system across both locations.

Questions we actually get

Manufacturing IT, in plain English

Do you work on our production equipment?

No, and you should be suspicious of an IT company that says yes. We don't program PLCs, we don't touch HMIs, and we stay away from safety systems entirely. That belongs to your integrator or machine builder.

What we own is the network under the controls, the plant systems, the boundary between the plant and the office, the business IT, and vendor access. We're happy to sit on a call with your integrator and sort out who does what before anything breaks.

We have a machine running an old operating system. What do we do?

Isolate it, don't replace it. Its own network segment, no path to the internet, controlled and logged access, a full image so a dead drive is an afternoon instead of a month, and documentation explaining why it is set up that way.

Replacing a machine that still runs, to satisfy an IT policy, is almost never the right call. We'll tell you that even though the other answer is a bigger project for us.

Our Wi-Fi dies past the office. Can you fix it?

Usually, but not from a phone call. We walk the building, measure at the height the devices actually live at, and map coverage against the equipment and racking as it stands. Then you get a written scope. Often the answer is fewer access points in better places rather than more of them.

A customer is asking about our cybersecurity before placing an order. Can you help?

Yes, on the technical side. We build the safeguards and document them, so when a customer or an auditor asks what you have in place, the evidence exists: patching records, monitoring, backup testing, training completion, access controls.

What we can't do is write your policies or sign an attestation for you. Those are yours. We'll make sure the technology sections are accurate and sit with whoever fills out the questionnaire.

Can you support more than one plant?

Yes. We connect locations securely, keep phones and file access consistent across them, and build each site to the same standard so the second and third one are a plan rather than a scramble. Laser Specialists above is two sites under one standard.

Do you run cabling, or subcontract it?

In-house. We schedule around your shifts, phase by area when that keeps production moving, and label and document what we install so the next person is not tracing wires to find out.

From production to protection, we've got the part that isn't the machines. Start with a free assessment — we'll find the gaps, tell you honestly which ones matter, and put it in writing.

What your free assessment includes

  • A walk of the actual floor, measured where the work happens.
  • Where the plant and office actually connect, and whether that's on purpose.
  • A fix-first priority list: what to handle now, soon, and later.
  • A straight answer on cost, real numbers, phased by area if that helps.

Takes about an hour of our time and very little of yours. If we're not the right fit, we'll tell you that too.
